Photo 1: I chose this one to start because it was the lightest and follows the theme. I like the contrast from the ground and sky. There are some distractions that I could maybe have been avoided such as the light above the person and the pole on the right. I also wish I would have gotten closer to the subject which is the same for every other photo in the sequence. Not getting close enough is my biggest weakness in this series. The photo gives off a gloomy feeling and starts to get the viewer in the calm headspace. I like the addition of the dog and the person as that could represent always having something/someone even when you're alone.
Photo 2: The idea was there for this photo but I wasn't able to take the picture I really wanted. The photo is tilted and I should have waited for this man to turn towards me. I also could have gotten closer and got him out of the middle of the frame. Although, I included it next since it had lighter colors and his flowers he is holding adds sympathy for this man and gets the viewer to ask why he's holding the flowers. Again, the subject is alone in this massive city symbolizing the loneliness/isolation.
Photo 3: I really liked the expressions of both of these people as well as them both looking opposite directions while also staying aligned if that makes sense. They both are standing under a lip on the building making them stand in a shadow which connects to the theme. I could have improved on the angle I took this picture. Getting closer obviously would have helped but maybe going to another part of the street would improve the composition.
Photo 4: I used this photo since the photo gets darker and shows the scale of the large buildings/monuments surrounding the person. The persons black outfit stands out and the all black continues the lonely mood/feeling. To improve the composition, more contrast is needed, the photo seems to blend too well together not separating the subject from the background.
Photo 5: I really liked this photo for multiple reasons. I thought that with the addition of the framing and the blue and pink colors that a lonely mood would be represented. The man is alone surrounded by everything, as if everything is closing in on him. The framing adds to the composition, as well as the blurred foreground and background. To improve the composition I would maybe need a facial expression or different body language to connect the viewer to the person.
Photo 6: I really liked this picture as well. The clear contrast of the yellow sweatshirt and the black background. I like that the person is the center of the photo as they are surrounded by darkness (loneliness). The photo is one of the darkest continuing the sequence. I like the simplicity of the photo as well. No distractions that draw the eye away.
Photo 7: I think this photo is the strongest out of the 7. Dark alley with contrast from the light going from the bottom of the image to the top. The theme is clearly shown here. There are actually two people sitting on the left. Getting those two to a more noticeable spot would make this photo even better. There is so much to look at in this photo with the leading lines on the ground as well as the walls leading to the back.
Overall, I think the photos fit the theme really well. I probably couldn't have used isolation as part of the theme if I shot up close. So getting those far away pictures I think helped more of the theme. However, I think getting closer and getting more facial expressions from the people would drastically improve the story telling of loneliness and improve my project. The photos going lighter to darker shows that loneliness can lead to dark places mentally and physically but knowing that you started from a place of happiness/light gives you hope that you won't be lonely forever. I think some people can relate to the theme/mood because of the pandemic we all have spent a lot of time alone so we all can compare to these people and locations.
I also just want to say that street photography is so difficult. These pictures were from my attempt of street photography and they could have been a lot better. In my mind I wanted to get photos like the ones in the Magnum Photos website but getting that close to people and taking their picture is so weird and difficult at first. Anyways I just wanted to share and would totally recommend others to try it.
My story/theme is loneliness and isolation.
